A Chance to Celebrate the Lives of Two Very Special Sea Turtles at the Next Sea Turtle Release with the South Carolina Aquarium

Charleston, SC (PRWEB) May 18, 2012

Mark your calendar for this Friday, May 18th. At 3:00 p.m. sharp the South Carolina Aquarium Sea Turtle Rescue Program will be releasing two loggerhead sea turtles back into the wild. Brought into the hospital on the brink of death, these two resilient turtles have made a full recovery. This release is being held in partnership with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) and the Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission (CCPRC). The event is open to the public; attendees should plan to carpool, arrive early, and expect to pay for parking at the County Park.

More on the sea turtles being released:

Jammer: Jammer is a 93-pound juvenile loggerhead sea turtle. S/he was rescued on the Isle of Palms near the Windjammer beach bar in April of last year. When brought into the hospital by SCDNR, Jammer was in extremely debilitated suffering from emaciation, dehydration, and had a heart rate of only 7 beats per minute. Upon admittance, there was concern that Jammer had neurological damage because s/he was swimming in circles in the same direction, but after several weeks of intensive care, Jammer began swimming normally. Treatment included antibiotics, fluids, vitamin injections, barnacle removal and treatment for shell damage due to secondary infection. After more than a year of treatment, Jammer is finally ready for the journey back into the Atlantic Ocean.

Hamlin Creek: Hamlin Creek is a 75-pound juvenile loggerhead sea turtle found in Hamlin Creek, also located on the Isle of Palms. S/he was rescued in June of last year suffering from severe dermatitis, dehydration, and had poor blood work. Treatment for Hamlin Creek included fluids, vitamin injections, and antibiotics. Since being admitted to the Sea Turtle Hospital, Hamlin Creek has gained weight and his/her skin has fully healed. Feisty and healthy, Hamlin Creek is ready to venture back into the open ocean.

Visitors are encouraged to carpool!

It costs approximately $ 36 per day to treat each sea turtle in the hospital, which amounts to a program budget of close to $ 321,000 each year. The Sea Turtle Rescue Program is part of the South Carolina Aquarium, a 501(c)3 non-profit that relies on the support of the community to treat and rehabilitate these endangered species. You can help support the program by making a donation and by visiting the hospital on a behind-the-scenes tour. Just go to http://www.scaquarium.org for more information. With your support, staff can continue to rehabilitate sick and injured sea turtles found along our coast.

Fridays release is actually taking place on Endangered Species Day. The Sea Turtle Rescue Program is just one of the many ways the Aquarium is committed to protecting South Carolinas wildlife, fish, and plants at risk of extinction.

About the South Carolina Aquarium Sea Turtle Rescue Program:

In partnership with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR), the South Carolina Aquarium Sea Turtle Rescue Program works to rescue, rehabilitate and release sea turtles that strand along the South Carolina coast. Located in the Aquarium, the Sea Turtle Hospital admits 20 to 30 sea turtles each year. Many of these animals are in critical condition and some are too sick to save.

According to SCDNR, over the last 10 years the average number of sea turtle standings on South Carolina beaches each year is 130. Of these, roughly 10% are alive and successfully transported to the Sea Turtle Hospital. To date, the South Carolina Aquarium has successfully rehabilitated and released 90 sea turtles and is currently treating 6 patients. The average cost for each patients treatment is $ 36 a day with the average length of stay reaching nine months.

HBO Special on Obesity Prompting Calls to SC Weight Loss Specialists, Hilton Head Health (H3)

Hilton Head, SC (PRWEB) May 16, 2012

For over 35 years, Hilton Head Health (H3) has helped thousands of men and women combat obesity through its proven weight loss program which provides participants the tools, knowledge and practice needed to lose weight and maintain a healthy weight, lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels, and even manage diabetes.

The HBO special "Weight of the Nation," which aired May 14 and 15, prompted many viewers who are struggling with obesity, diabetes and other related health problems to pick up the phone and call for help. H3 staffers anticipated the jump in calls and have been ready to assist with weight loss program information, as well as success stories of recent program participants.

"People are looking for answers and for help," said H3 Diabetes and Nutrition expert, Bob Wright. "When someone has tried so many times to lose weight or to change their lifestyle without success, it takes courage to try one more time. We're thrilled that people are aware of our program and are looking to us for help."

Recent Guest, Karen McCarty, is one of many who has benefited from participating in the Hilton Head Health program. McCartys story is all too familiar among todays society she had a sedentary lifestyle and poor eating habits, which led to gradual weight gain. During a visit to her physician, she was diagnosed with diabetes. At that moment, she knew she had to make a lifestyle change and take charge of her health by managing the disease through diet and exercise.

McCarty participated in the H3 Healthy Lifestyle program for three weeks and in that short time, she lost 5% of her body weight and lowered her glucose levels to within the normal range. I was scared when my doctor told me I had diabetes and would have to take medication for the rest of my life, says McCarty. I knew I had waited too long to start putting my health first and Hilton Head Health showed me exactly what to dofrom food to fitnessin a manner in which I could understand and is easy for me to maintain while at home.

Watch McCartys full testimonial to see how she took control of her diabetes through the lessons she learned while in the H3 Healthy Lifestyle program.

Another recent Guest, Lyle Orr, also found success in the Healthy Lifestyle program.

My wake up call literally came when I noticed a note placed under my door while traveling on business," said Orr. "The note said You snored ALL night longwe didnt sleep muchyou need to get help. Although I knew obesity was negatively affecting my health, it wasnt until this moment that I realized the affect it was having on those around me. H3 was the jump start I needed to start taking care of myself.

In 2011, Orr visited H3 for four weeks, during which he lost 23 pounds and eight inches. Orr signed up for the H3 @ Home Wellness Coaching program to help him stay on track and within one year lost over 130 pounds.

Orr shares his weight loss secrets in a video presentation given to H3 guests. Watch his presentation on Hilton Head Healths daily blog at http://www.H3Daily.com.

One of the most rewarding parts of my job is to be able to see the positive changes within our Guests and the lasting impact on the quality of their lives," said Wright. "Ive had the pleasure of working at H3 for over 30 years and it never ceases to amaze me how determined and motivating the Guests are to one another, and how the leaders at H3 are constantly enhancing the program to meet each Guest's needs."

Hilton Head Health was selected to be featured on A&E's weight loss docudrama, HEAVY, which aired in January 2011. Unlike other weight loss series, HEAVY was not a competition, rather an in-depth look at the personal struggles, triumphs and transformations of twenty-two individuals who struggled with obesity. In order to most accurately document these multiple journeys over the course of six months, A&E sought out two different production companies and locations to undertake the lengthy and ambitious filming process. Twelve participants began their journey at H3, while ten others participated in a program in Texas.

Healthline.com Partners with Crohns & Colitis Foundation of America for IBD Awareness Month Fundraiser

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) May 18, 2012

May is Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD) Awareness Month, and Healthline.com today announced it has partnered with the Crohns & Colitis Foundation of America to launch a massive online social media fundraiser. Starting May 16, and running through July 1st, Healthline Networks will match donations made to http://www.healthline.com/health/crohns-disease/fundraiser dollar-for-dollar. All money raised during this 6-week effort will be donated to the Crohns and Colitis Foundation to help find a cure for Crohns disease and ulcerative colitis.

Most people with Crohns disease are between the ages of 15 and 35, which is why Healthline.com and the Crohns and Colitis Foundation turned to social networks to raise money and awareness.

Everyone has a dollar to give and we wanted to make it as easy as possible for people to donate, said Tracy Rosecrans, Healthlines social media manager. Since so many young people are affected by Crohns Disease and IBD, we thought a social media campaign was the best way to help make this fundraiser go viral.

People will be able to easily embed event badges on their websites and social networking pages like Facebook and Twitter. Healthline.coms official fundraiser site will offer a live ticker tally of donations received. There is a clock to count down the days, hours and minutes left to donate.
